From the flying eagles

to the us ski team

Adam Loomis: age 25.

After watching the Salt Lake City Olympics as a ten year old, I jumped into this sport with the lofty dream of someday calling myself an Olympian.  I came close to realizing that goal in the Sochi Olympics.  Although I didn't make the team, my motivation is high and my eyes are on 2018.

I grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  Upon graduating from high school, I spent the next two years training in Steamboat Springs, CO.  Now,  Park City, UT has been my home since I made the US Team in April 2012.

In high school I competed in Nordic competitions throughout the Midwest and nation.  I also skied for Chippewa Valley Nordic, Eau Claire's high school country ski team, and ran cross country.  Now my training and competition is a full time engagement, but I do find time for other activities.  I love all types of skiing, whether it is on a mountain or in a forest, on snow or on water.

My favorite forms of cross training include backcountry skiing, running, yoga and all forms of bike riding.

I have worked a variety of part-time jobs, from a science camp counselor for elementary school students to a detailer at a local car dealership.  In Steamboat, I learned the secrets of the restaurant world at the local gem Ciao Gelato.  Now I wait tables in the evenings at a local Swiss restaurant.   The managers are flexible enough to let me work around my crazy schedule, and working part-time helps to pay for my living, equipment and travel expenses.

One of my favorite pastimes is slacklining

(which is an activity in which one strings a climbing rope between two trees and walks along the line like a tightrope walker.)  My friends and I often get strange looks while doing this, and when people ask the inevitable, "Why?" I would reply, “Because it’s a challenge.”  That might not be enough of a reason for everyone, but it certainly is for me.  At age ten I taught myself how to ride a unicycle, simply because it was something that I had never done and always wanted to do.  Around that same time I took log rolling classes at the YMCA.  I will admit that it’s a rare occasion when I get to exercise my lumberjack talent, but that’s not the important part.
